Mutoni: The Innovator of Kiruku
This comic book follows the journey of Mutoni, a teenage girl from rural Gakenke district who is fascinated by science. Despite daily chores and societal discouragement, she refuses to give up on her dreams. She teams up with colleagues to create an invention that revolutionizes agriculture, gaining recognition locally and internationally. Driven by a desire to make the world better through the magic of science, the power of technology, and the hope of innovation, the young inventors inspire people across generations to pursue impactful ideas. Their journey is only beginning, and they remain committed to improving lives and uplifting communities.

How it came about
In October 2023, I was awarded Best Science, Technology and Innovation Communicator by the Rwanda National Council for Science and Technology (NCST), largely for raising awareness of these fields through my journalism. As part of the award, I was required to undertake a project that would further enhance public awareness. I chose to write a book targeting primarily young people, which led to the creation of Mutoni: The Innovator of Kiruku.
Through engaging text and illustrations, the book highlights the relevance of science in everyday life, demonstrates how curiosity, teamwork, and creativity can lead to meaningful change, and provides relatable role models who show that age, gender, or location should never limit the pursuit of knowledge and discovery.
Audience
• Primary: Students or youth aged 10–18
• Secondary: General readers interested in children/youth literature, science, technology or innovation
Book launch and science outreach events
To celebrate the release of Mutoni: The Innovator of Kiruku, special events are organized in schools to engage students in a dynamic and inspiring experience that blends literature, science, and creativity. Each event serves as a platform to spark curiosity and passion for science among young learners.
Through interactive activities, students learn that science is part of everyday life and that they, too, can become scientists, innovators and changemakers in their communities.
Main activities
Interactive reading & discussion
The author leads a reading session with selected students from S1–S3. Students ask questions and share lessons learned from the book. The most insightful contributions are recognized with small awards.
Science poetry session
A poet performs a science-themed poem to inspire curiosity. Selected students recite the poem aloud. The audience votes, and top performers receive prizes.
Scientific talk
A guest scientist or STEM professional shares their personal journey. They highlight how science improves lives and the importance of scientific thinking. Students engage through an interactive question-and-answer session.
Optional school add-ons
Schools are encouraged to showcase student-created innovations, poems, and songs related to science. Additional guest speakers may be invited if aligned with the theme. These activities enhance creativity and student engagement.
